Biden’s support with Black voters put to test in South Carolina primary

Democrats officially kicked off their 2024 presidential nominating race on Saturday in South Carolina, where U.S. President Joe Biden faces little opposition, but votes will be closely watched amid concerns about his popularity, especially with Black voters.
Biden, 81, an unpopular incumbent who faces little competition for his party’s nomination in the run-up to the Nov. 5 U.S. election, is hoping for an overwhelming victory with the heavily Black electorate in South Carolina to quiet doubts about his age and concerns about high consumer prices and security along the U.S.-Mexican border.
Democratic officials interviewed by Reuters expect somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 total primary votes, after a county-by-county tour of the Southern state aimed at exciting voters and multiple events featuring Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris.
