A federal judge on Thursday threw \u200bout an administrative board’s decision that endorsed the Trump administration’s policy of placing thousands of people arrested during its immigration crackdown \u200bin mandatory detention without a chance to be released on bond. Bucking a long-standing interpretation of the law, the DHS last year – as part of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown – took the position that non-citizens already residing in the United States, \u200band not only those who arrive at a port of entry at the border, qualify as applicants for admission. The Board of Immigration Appeals, which is part of the U.S. Department of Justice, issued a decision in September that adopted that interpretation, leading to immigration judges nationally employed \u200cby the department to mandate detention.
