The New Zealand government has extended an agreement for a 550,000-barrel strategic diesel reserve until Aug. 1, 2027, to strengthen the country’s fuel security amid global uncertainty.
The reserve, held by Z Energy at Marsden Point in the country’s Northland, is intended to protect domestic fuel supplies against potential disruptions, as diesel is critical to the economy, including key sectors such as agriculture and freight transport, Finance Minister Nicola Willis and Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones said in a statement on Wednesday.
Jones said that fuel supplies remain consistent, but the extension would help maintain domestic fuel resilience and protect against potential disruptions to diesel supply.
Diesel will continue to be stored in tanks at Marsden Point, and the storage capacity is about 90 million liters of fuel, equivalent to roughly nine days of typical national fuel consumption, the statement said.
Under the agreement, Z Energy will continue to own and manage the diesel, while the government will control its release into the domestic market.
If the diesel remains unused when the contract ends, it will progressively transition into Z Energy’s regular stocks through November 2027.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
